If you’re like many people, you may believe that HVAC systems and air conditioners are the same thing. However, you might be shocked to know that they are not the same! Like any part of owning a home, you must understand the difference between the two.

What is an HVAC?
HVAC stands for heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. It’s a catch-all term to describe an entire system of machinery that delivers both heated and cooled air through a heat pump and air conditioning unit.
4 Types of HVAC Systems
There are several types of HVAC systems, but these are the most common ones used by homeowners:
- Electric Furnace/AC System: This system uses electricity to power a unit that pushes hot or cold air through your home.
- Boiler/AC System: This system features a boiler that heats your home through pipes and radiators while a separate system delivers cool air.
- Heat Pump/Air Handler: This system includes a heat pump installed outside your home. The heat pump produces cold and warm air, which is circulated by an air handler.
- Mini Split: This system is becoming popular because it delivers heated or cooled air through a much smaller unit without ductwork.
What is an Air Conditioner?
An air conditioner is usually a stand-alone unit that produces only cool air. Window units placed in older homes without available ductwork are the perfect example of an air conditioner.
